Big Business

I received an emailed file and one page of it needed to be printed. With no printer available to me I copied the file to a USB flash drive. Next I drove to an Office Depot Store providing such services.

The imposing, high-ceiling store covered possibly a few acres. Unsure where to hike, I approached two husky men in red shirts bearing the Office Depot logo. "For print-outs. sir, go to the counter at that corner of the store," said one, pointing the way. The other pulled out an electronic device and, while poking it, said, "I will message the personnel over there to let them know you are coming, sir, so they will be ready to serve you right away."

At the counter I saw a sign advertising print-outs in color or black & white. I elected to go first class all the way and requested a color copy. The clerk plugged my flash drive into a computer, brought the document onto the screen, and asked me please to confirm it was the correct document. Not only was it the correct one, it was the only one on the drive.

With one mouse click my document exited a printer. It was black & white. The clerk offered apologies, eager to reprint it in color. This of course was unnecessary and I accepted the copy produced.

Next I was directed to another counter where I could pay for my merchandise. Total charge with tax: $0.12. "Just a minute, sir. I have your receipt," said the clerk. A receipt as long as my arm came out of the register rivaling in volume my own sheet. One day I may read it all.

I must commend Office Depot for their attentiveness to such weighty business transactions. I have no complaints.

Well, a little transportation within the store would
be a nice touch.
